South-North partnerships: A possible pathway toward democracy promoting education in the era of digitalisation?

Summary

Education for democracy must take globality and social justice into account. This webinar, based on empirical studies of South-North school partnerships, examines the conditions that promote and hinder cooperative, sustainable collaboration. The focus is on participation and the role of digitality as a challenge and opportunity for global interaction and democracy.

Speakers

  • Annette Scheunpflug (Otto-Friedrich-University, Bamberg, Germany)
  • Onja Tiana Raharijaona (Teacher Educator, Madagscar)
  • Susanne Timm (Otto-Friedrich-University, Bamberg, Germany)

Description

To be truly effective, education that promotes democracy has to be rooted in an understanding of globality, integrating social justice at a conceptual level. With this framework, the webinar aims to reflect on and conceptualize conditions for effective South-North school partnerships. Building on empirical data (interviews with school leaders and teachers in sub-Sahara Africa), we will examine conducive and obstructive conditions for the co-operative and sustainable design of South-North school partnerships that enhance democratic attitudes. Special emphasis will be placed on exploring digitality as a global context; as a challenge, and as an opportunity for global interaction. The session gives empirical insights and practical ideas.
