The Bloomsbury Handbook of Global Education and Learning.
The 33-chapter Bloomsbury Handbook, published in March 2020, is the first comprehensive handbook examining global education, edited by, and featuring writing by ANGEL chair Professor Douglas Bourn, Professor of Development Education and Co-Director of the Development Education Research Centre at the UCL Institute of Education. The book solicited submissions from the ANGEL network, and features writing by many ANGEL members.
In the last decade, learning about global issues and themes has become an increasingly recognised element of education in many countries around the world, with terms such as ‘global learning’, ‘global citizenship’ and ‘global education’ increasingly incorporated into national education policies and international initiatives led by the UN, UNESCO, European Commission and OECD. These issues have gained momentum worldwide, not only in the political agenda of many European countries, but also within school practice, and academic discourse. It follows then, that in this time period the number of publications on the theme of Global Education, and related issues, has increased dramatically – data and further analysis on these trends can be found in the ‘Global Education Digest’, an annual reasoned bibliography of academic and research materials developed by DERC as part of its work on the ANGEL project.
Despite this, there is not a substantial single publication that attempts to bring together all of the main elements of the key debates in these areas. The Bloomsbury Handbook aims to fulfil this role, as well as providing analysis of policies, and suggesting new directions for research. Written by a wide and consciously diverse group of renowned scholars from Brazil, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Pakistan, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, UK and the USA, the handbook offers a much needed resource for academics, researchers, policy-makers and practitioners who need a clear picture of global learning.
