Save the date: #ANGELConference 2025.

Please mark your diaries for the Academic Network for Global Education & Learning Conference 2025, the fifth biennial conference of the EU-funded* ANGEL project, which will bring together academics, researchers, policy-makers and practitioners with an interest in research on Global Education & Learning, Education for Sustainability, and Global Citizenship.

The event will be delivered in partnership with the University of Bamberg, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Engagement Global, Global Education Network Europe (GENE), and IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education & Society, and aims to expand on the extremely successful 2023 event in Paris.

Our 2025 event will be held between 4-6 June 2025 in the Humboldt Forum, in Berlin, Germany.

The conference theme is given as 'Research in Global Education and Learning'. This will be further elaborated upon by a concept note in September. The conference will also present substantial opportunities for online participation.

Who is the conference for?

Conceived as a major, internationally focused gathering, the ANGEL Conference 2025 aims to bring together interested parties from all backgrounds to participate in sessions showcasing and discussing research, projects, and new developments connected to Global Education and Learning or Global Citizenship Education, and other related fields such as Development Education, Human Rights Education, Education for Sustainable Development, Education for Peace, and Intercultural Education. This event will prioritise transversal activities that promote and enrich connections between researchers, policy-makers, and civil society organisations, especially those which capitalise on the rare opportunity to gather face-to-face.

The venue

The Humboldt Forum is a museum dedicated to human history, art and culture, and is located in the Berlin Palace on the Museum Island in the historic centre of Berlin. It incorporates two former museums, the Ethnological Museum of Berlin and the Museum of Asian Art, and now houses the non-European collections of the Berlin State Museums, as well as temporary exhibitions.

We consider this an ideal venue for the ANGEL conference, encouraging critical conversations about colonial legacies and justice which are key topics for global educators. The museum, relatively newly refurbished and reconfigured, has been at the centre of prominent discussions on decolonial practice and transcultural cooperation. Read more here

Background

This will be the 5th international conference on Global Education and Learning organised by ANGEL. The first three editions (2017, 2019, 2021) were organized by the Development Education Research Centre (DERC) within IOE, with the support of GENE, and were all held in London, apart from the 2021 event which was held online. The fourth edition was delivered by DERC in partnership with UNESCO (supported again by GENE), and hosted in the UNESCO HQ in Paris. A further major event, focused primarily on Early Career Researchers, was held in 2020, and hosted by the University of Oulu.

ANGEL is a EU co-funded network established in 2017 through close cooperation between GENE and DERC.  Building upon foundational collaborations between these organisations and the University of Bamberg in Germany, the University of Oulu in Finland, and the University of Bologna in Italy, the project has grown steadily to incorporate many more partners. The project arose in response to the need to establish and reinforce existing relationships among scholars (particularly early career stage researchers) and academic institutions working in global education and related areas, and to link and interface this community with interested policymakers and practitioners.

The network has grown quickly, with more than 1400 registered stakeholders in 85 different countries. As well as the aforementioned conferences, the network has produced a number of publications, and runs a webinar series. For more details, please explore our website.
