Global Education and Learning in the Asia Pacific Region.
Bringing together academics, policymakers, and practitioners with an interest in Global Education and Learning who are working in or on the Asia Pacific region.
The Academic Network for Global Education & Learning (ANGEL), in partnership with UNESCO°, will be organising its fourth international conference on 19 (10:00-16:30 CET) & 20 (09:00-15:15 CET) June 2023, at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, with an event theme of ‘Global Education & Learning for a Just, Peaceful and Sustainable World’. You can view the main event webpage here.
We are issuing an open call for proposals for a range of sessions and presentations at this exciting event, with a deadline of 19 February 2023. All successful applicants will of course be guaranteed a place at the event.
After several years of online interaction, the event aims to bring academics, researchers, policy-makers, and practitioner-researchers from around the world for two exciting face-to-face days of sessions covering research relevant to Development Education, Global Citizenship Education, Human Rights Education, Education for Sustainable Development, Education for Peace, and Intercultural Education.
Offering a mixture of plenary sessions, workshops, symposia, paper presentations, and networking, it is anticipated that sessions and presentations will cover all sectors of education, evidence from all kinds of research, as well as discussion on relations between the research, policy, and fields.
The event is organised by ANGEL in partnership with UNESCO, with the cooperation of Global Education Network Europe (GENE), IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education & Society, and the UNESCO Chair in GCED in Higher Education, based at the University of Bologna. This event, along with the other activities of the ANGEL network, is co-funded by the European Union.*
We are calling for submission of proposals from academics, policymakers, and practitioners, for a wide range of sessions, including paper presentation sessions, symposia, workshops and other special sessions across the two days. We are particularly keen to hear proposals for sessions that would maximise the potential of a face-to-face meeting, and ones that provide bridging points between the academic community and policy and practitioner networks.
Submissions can be in French and English. However, the official language of the conference is English and we are only able to provide simultaneous interpretation services for the keynote sessions. If you seek to present in French, of course you are welcome to arrange your own simultaneous interpretation.
Participation can take the following forms:
Please note that this is going to be a face-to-face event, with only the plenary keynote sessions broadcast online.
Your submission should demonstrate a connection or relevance to the conference themes and aims, as listed above, and / or a connection with global education and learning, as defined initially in the ‘Maastricht Declaration’, and now in the new ‘Dublin Declaration’, formally known as the Declaration on Global Education in Europe to 2050. Please note that we will be prioritising presentations that relate to research projects that are complete over those which are under way.
Abstracts for paper presentations are limited to 200 words (350 words for symposia and workshops etc) and must be submitted by the end of 19 February 2023. Your submission will be double blind peer reviewed, and you will receive a decision about whether we can include your presentation or symposium by 3 March at the latest.

The conference this year has no dedicated early career researcher session. Though those who fit this category (current PhD student or completed in the last 6 years) are of course welcome to submit proposals, but unlike previous years they will be assessed via the same process as all other submissions. However, we are hosting a complementary online event called New voices in Global Education & Learning on Wed, 19 Apr 12:30 BST. In contrast to the event in Paris, this more accessible session for early career researchers will accept proposals about developing projects or incomplete research, and is seen as providing a space where early career researchers can meet and discuss their research online in a relatively relaxed and informal environment, as well as receive feedback from more established academics. Find out more here.
Please indicate during the application process whether you are interested in your research being included in any publications documenting the event. Members who present their research will also have the opportunity to submit a final article for the consideration of the International Journal of Development Education and Global Learning, and a chance to meet the editor to discuss this at the event. We also plan to invite some presenters to feature in an edited book.
We will also be giving a special award to the Best Paper at the event.
We are calling on members to help us spread the word about this important event for the ANGEL project. Please find below links to resources that you can use to promote the event and the call for submissions.
